Product recalls seem to be a part of everyday life, and thankfully, the recalls usually occur before anything bad happens. You have likely owned a few products that ended up recalled, including vehicle parts, toys, electrical items, etc. One of the newest and most dangerous recalls to hit the market recently involves residential elevators.

The Recall

This recall has to do with a certain type of residential elevator (the type that would be installed directly into a home that has more than one level). Designed by Elmira Hydraulic, these elevators have accordion style doors, control panels, an emergency stop button, and a power failure light. To determine if you have this model of elevator, look on the control panel. It should say Cambridge Elevating on it. The elevators themselves were mostly sold through Coastal Carolina Elevators between 2006 and 2009, but they are not limited to the Carolina area. In fact, they were sold to residential contractors all over the country.

There were about 240 of the elevators manufactured and installed during that time period. All 240 fall under the recall and should be replaced immediately for the safety of the homeowners and any family or children they may have.

The Danger

These elevators pose a very serious hazard, making them extremely dangerous. They can operate with the door open, meaning they can pose a very serious risk of crushing. While many recalls happen before there have been injuries, it’s not the case here. In fact, a 10 year old boy from Baltimore was severely injured from the elevators. He has catastrophic brain injuries that will result in permanent damage. In addition to this child who was severely injured, there have been two other reported incidents of injury, but they haven’t been as severe as the Baltimore boy.

Information

The recall itself is being handled by Coastal Carolina Elevators and the company has a section set up on their website at www.CoastalCarolinaElevators.com. If you want to find out more information about the elevators being recalled, go to this website and click on the Recall tab at the top of the page. You can also call Coastal Carolina Elevators directly at 843-399-6545. You need to find out for certain if you have one of these elevators so that you can have it replaced as soon as possible. The risk is too dangerous to wait and take chances with your family’s well being.

Product recalls happen all the time, and people need to be aware of consumer dangers that come along with defective items. If you or someone in your home was injured by a product, you will need to contact a personal injury attorney. Even if there was a recall in place, you may have a case against the manufacturing company. In some cases, the products aren’t that hazardous, but there are times when the danger is very real and very serious. That’s the case with the residential elevators. Because these elevators have already caused catastrophic brain injuries in at least one child, it is vital that all recalls are handled quickly.
