Every year, thousands of women die, or suffer life-altering injuries, because doctors and nurses are not performing basic tasks. A shocking, new investigative report from USA Today confirms that almost 2 mothers die everyday- 700 total a year, and 50,000 are left severely injured, during childbirth. What is even more shocking is the fact that half of these incidents could be prevented if basic safety precautions were followed, like weighing bloody pads to track blood loss and administering medication at the first sign of high blood pressure.
As a result, women are left to bleed until their organs shut down. Their high blood pressure goes untreated until they suffer strokes. They die of preventable blood clots and untreated infections. Survivors can be left paralyzed or unable to have more children.
Furthermore, compared to other developed countries, more mothers are dying in the U.S. than any other- and the numbers are actually rising. In the U.S, there are 26.4 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births, compared to Germany’s 9, the U.K.’s 8.8, Canada’s 7.3 and Japan’s 6.4. Experts predict that numbers will continue to be grim in the foreseeable future.
So what’s the solution? It’s simple. Hospitals and staff need to provide adequate healthcare and must be held accountable if they lack doing so.
When a medical professional makes a mistake, it’s called malpractice. Perhaps the most disturbing type of malpractice is when an error happens simply because somebody didn’t care enough – or didn’t think it was important enough – to do their job the right way. The standard for malpractice is when a health care provider fails to provide a standard level of care, and thus causes harm to a patient. Both a substandard level of care and real harm must be proved in order for you to recover damages. In the case of a death due to medical malpractice, a wrongful death suit may be appropriate.
The birth of a child is the most exciting time of one’s life. But not many prepare or even want to begin to think about what happens if something doesn’t go as planned.
